Monkey Brains Story

Monkey Brains is an incredible jungle adventure combining puzzle elements, aerial acrobatics and hilarious monkey antics.  Using all of your primate powers, you must capture and destroy an evil doctor's mind controlling machines.

Dr. Simius and his colleague, Dr. Kreep have been sent to a tropical island off the coast of Malaysia to perform research devoted to understanding the human brain. They have created a mind-controlling machine and their test subjects are tailless monkeys native to the island. The machine has proven more powerful than anticipated and, in his lust for power, Dr. Kreep has overtaken the island. You must stop Dr. Kreep before he escapes the island with the cursed technology and threatens all of mankind.

How To Play

In-Game Interface

The information in the upper left explains what level of Monkey Brains you are on and the level name.

The information in the upper right corner will tell you if you are in 1 or 2 player mode.

The bottom of the screen contains the following:

Hint Bar – this is a scrolling text box that will give you hints and tips on how to play the game

Health Meter – the area just below the hint bar is your Health Meter.  It will range from green to red.  You will need to gather bananas and super fruits to keep your monkey alive.  If your Health Meter completely runs out, you will lose the game and have to restart the level (or load a saved game).

Monkey Monitor – the area beneath the health meter keeps track of each monkey that is active in that level and the health of each monkey.  If a monkey gets too stupid, its head will burst into flames.  If you aren’t controlling that monkey, it will run amuck and possibly interfere with your goal.

Bananas/Super Fruit counter – the area to the right of the Monkey Monitor will tell you how many Bananas and Super Fruit you have.  You will need to gather these in order to keep your monkey smart and to the keep the Health Meter in the green.

Hints and Monkey Tips

1.      Be sure to always keep some Bananas and Super Fruit in sight.  If possible, keep a monkey near a stash of Bananas or Super Fruits to switch back to if your health is running low

2.      Before a particularly nasty section of the game (lots of bombs or hordes of monkey-eating plants), save your game.

3.      After you complete a level, you are given a password.  Write them down. If you have to exit a game mid-episode and don't want to save over your previous game, the password will allow you to skip to the next level.  This prevents you from having to start an episode from the beginning level each time you enter.
For example - You've finished Episode 2, Level 1 and have just started Level 2 and have to leave the game.  When you come back to play, instead of having to start Episode 2 from the beginning and play Level 1 all over again, you can enter the password from Level 1 and it will take you to the beginning of Level 2.

4.      Be sure to take Dr. Simius with you throughout the level.   In most levels, you have to get Dr. Simius through the last door in order to pass that level.

5.      Be sure to destroy all of the Monkey Mind Machines!  Monkeys can climb on the Mind Machines by pressing the up arrow and they can destroy them by pressing “Enter”.

Trouble Shooting

Common problems

Sound bug with Creative SB Live! Sound card.

If you experience any sound anomalies while playing Monkey Brains, exit to the main menu and either restart the episode, restore a saved game, or enter a password to start the level over again. The sound will be an obvious buzzing noise and has been encountered with the Creative SB Live! sound cards only.

Alt+Tab and Ctrl+Esc don't pause the game?

Alt+Tab and Ctrl+Esc will minimize the game.  They will not, however, pause the game.  To pause the game, hit ESC.  You can then press Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Esc to minimize the game.  To Exit the game, maximize the game and then exit normally.  DO NOT select Close from the minimized version of the game - this will not properly shut down the game.

I experience an error when I try to open Monkey.

Monkey Brains requires DirectX 6.1 or later. If your drivers are not DirectX certified, please download or obtain the latest drivers from your card manufacturer. This is the number one problem people have with DirectX games. Even if you think you have the latest drivers, you probably don’t. This will most likely solve your problem.

After you have updated your drivers, you should reinstall DirectX (from whatever folder you downloaded it to), and restart Windows. If you are having sound or video problems, you should try reinstalling DirectX.

How do I get DirectX?

DirectX is most likely already installed on your computer, but there may be a more up to date version available. DirectX is a free download from Microsoft. We recommend getting the most up to date version, as it will most likely make all your games perform better. You can get the latest version from their website at:

http://www.real.com/games/directx.html

Determining if your Video card is DirectX compatible: For DirectX diagnosing tools, open Windows Explorer and go to the C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup\  directory. Run the program named Dxdiag.exe. This will give you detailed information for all your drivers and other DirectX components. This will also help tech support if you should need to call them.

If you are crashing upon exit of the game, particularly if you see a DDRAW error,  please try to obtain the latest drivers for your video card. More up-to-date info on DirectX can be found at:

http://www.real.com/games/directx.html

Optimizing your hard drive: Run SCANDISK and DEFRAG your hard drive. There is a great
